'Wh' Words అంటే...
Snigdha: All our friends are here. We can start our program.

Chitra: Certainly but let's check once again. Is Chandana here
(తప్పకుండా. అయినా ఒక్కసారి చూసుకుందాం. చందన ఉందా?)
Chandana: I am here of course. Come on. Is Charitha coming too?
(నేనిక్కడే ఉన్నా కదా! కానీ, చరిత కూడా వస్తోందా?)
Snigdha: Why are you asking? Look. She is standing next to the table.
(ఎందుకు అడుగుతున్నావు? చూడు. తను టేబుల్ పక్కనే నిలబడి ఉంది.)
Chandana: Are you waiting for anyone else, Chitra? Why don't you go ahead and cut the cake? Is n't it getting late?
(నువ్వు ఇంకా ఎవరికోసమైనా చూస్తున్నావా? చిత్రా? కానీ.... కేక్ ఎందుకు కోయడం లేదు? ఆలస్యం కావడం లేదా?)
Who else - ఇక్కడ else = ఇతర/ఇంకా
who else? = ఇంకెవరన్నా;
What else? = ఇంకేదైనా,
Why else? = ఇంకెందుకు? / మరే కారణం వల్ల?
Chitra: All right. No more delay. I am cutting the cake, now itself.
(సరే అయితే. ఇంకేం ఆలస్యం లేదు. ఇప్పుడే కేక్ కోసేస్తున్నా.)
Look at the following sentences:
1) All our friends are here.
2) She is standing next to the table.
3) Is Chandana here?
4) Why are you asking?
Sentences (1) and (2) ను statements అంటాం. అంటే ఒక విషయాన్ని తెలిపేవి/ చెప్పేవి. ఇప్పుడు statements (1) and (2) లో word order చూద్దాం:
1) All our friends are here.
'All our friends' (subject)
'are' (verb)
ఇది statement. ఇందులో word order ఏంటి?
subject ముందూ, verb తర్వాత (subject + verb) వస్తాయి.
2) She (sub) is standing (verb) next to the table
ఇది కూడా statement. ఇందులో కూడా subject first, verb next కదా. అంటే English లో ఏ statement లో అయినా word order: subject (sub) + Verb (vb).
ఇంకా వివరంగా చెప్పాలంటే sub+verb word order ఉన్న sentences లన్నీ కూడా statements అవుతాయన్నమాట.
3) Is Chandana here?
ఇది question కదా? దీని word order చూద్దాం:
Is(verb) Chandana (subject) here?
చూశారా?
Question word order: Verb + subject (statement word order: subject + verb గుర్తుంది కదా?)
అంటే statement word order: sub + verb
question word order: verb + subject.
English లో ఇది చాలా ముఖ్యమైన తేడా.
Is India a big country
- దీని word order: verb sub
Verb + sub orderలో ఉంది. కాబట్టి ఇది question అవుతుంది. అందుకే sentence చివర question mark (?) పెడతాం. Is india a big country? ఈ తేడా statement కూ, question కూ మధ్య, బాగా తెలుసుకుని మీ సంభాషణలో ఉపయోగించుకోగలిగితే, మీ Spoken English correct గా ఉంటుంది.
పై సంభాషణ (Conversation) నుంచే ఇంకో question చూద్దాం:
Is Charitha coming?
ఈ question లో Charitha, subject. Is coming, verb కదా? అయితే ఇక్కడి verbలో is, coming అని రెండు మాటలున్నాయి. Verb లో ఇలా రెండు మాటలున్నప్పుడు, మొదటి మాటను Helping Verb (HV) అని, తర్వాతి మాట(ల)ను, Main Verb (MV) అని అంటాం.
పై question word order:
Is Charitha coming?
HV + sub + MV
అంటే question word order రెండు విధాలుగా ఉండొచ్చు.
1) Vb + sub
[Are(verb) you(sub) a student?]
2) HV + sub + MV
(Is + Charitha + coming ?)
గమనించండి: Question లో subject ఎప్పుడూ verb తర్వాత లేదా Helping verb తర్వాత ఉంటుంది. ఇది చాలా ముఖ్యమైన అంశం. కింది questions చూడండి.
3) What is your name?
Word order: 'Wh' word + Verb + Sub
4) Why are you asking?
Word order: 'Wh' word + HV + Sub + MV
(HV - Helping Verb; MV - Main Verb)
Qs 3 and 4లో కూడా verb తర్వాత లేదా helping verb తర్వాత subject రావడం చూశారు కదా? అయితే పైన 1, 2 ప్రశ్నలకూ; 3, 4 ప్రశ్నలకూ తేడా గమనించండి. 1, 2 ప్రశ్నలు Verb/ Helping verb తో ప్రారంభమవుతాయి. 3, 4 'Wh' words తో ప్రారంభమవుతున్నాయి కదా?
'Wh' words అంటే, Wh తో ప్రారంభమవుతాయి. సామాన్యంగా questions అడిగేందుకు వాడే మాటలు:
What = ఏది/ దేన్ని?
When = ఎప్పుడు?
Where = ఎక్కడ?
Which = ఏది? (వస్తువులతో; రెండు అంతకు మించిన వారిలో/ వాటిలో ఏది?)
Why = ఎందుకు?
Who = ఎవరు? ఎవరిని/ ఎవరికి? (ఈ అర్థంతో Whom అని కూడా అంటాం)
Whose = ఎవరి? / ఎవరిది?
పైవన్నీ 'Wh' words.
English లో questions రెండు రకాలు:
1) 'Wh' words తో ప్రారంభమైన 'Wh' questions. e.g.: Where are you?
2) 'Wh' words లేని 'Non-wh' questions e.g.: Are you an Indian?
('Wh' question అయినా Non-wh question అయినా, subject ఎప్పుడూ verb తర్వాత లేదా Helping verb తర్వాత వస్తుందనేది గుర్తుంచుకోవాలి.)
Q: Where is he? ('Wh' question)
A: He is in Hyderabad (Statement)
చూశారు కదా? 'Wh' questions కెప్పుడూ answer, statement రూపంలోనే ఉంటుంది.
Q: Is he your friend? (Non-wh question)
A: Yes, he is.../ No, he is not...
Non-wh questions కెప్పుడూ answer లో Yes/ No ఉంటుంది. 🙋♂
